Notes: I have been seeing these types of sites selling more and more lately and they are quite popular. One thing to be careful of when entering the coupons niche is that there will be lots of domains available that include a companies name. I recommend you do NOT buy domains with trademarked company names.
Why put in all the effort of building up a great little money maker and then having the chance of getting a cease and desist order from a major corporation's legal team. Better to play it safe.
The first thing I noticed when going through this site is that they do a very good job of list building. Immediately you'll see a large opt-in "light box" and then also the opportunity to subscribe is well placed in the sidebar.This site also has a very large facebook "likes" count at over 50,000.
People love coupons and freebies that help them save money and are more than happy to
"like", "follow" and subscribe to your content. If you build a site like this properly, it can
quickly go viral through social media. When people find great deals, they want to immediately share it with friends online.
I remember when groupon had a movie ticket discount, my facebook blew up with people wanting to be first to share with their friends. With a site like this you act as the intermediary... have visitors share YOUR blog post on facebook instead of direct linking to groupon and other deal sites.
If you provide good instructions on how to claim all the various discounts and any tips you come up with - you will be able to grow your trafic quickly. A big benefit of this type of site is that you can easily find deals and coupons from other blogs and post them on your site with your own description and tips as needed. If I was to get into the discounts/freebies/coupons niche... I would find a stay at home mom who is already doing online couponing and outsource to them.
Perhaps pay her to post 3 deals a day with 100 to 200 words for each post describing the deal and how to claim it. The other great thing about these types of sites is that you can monetize the site a variety of ways... this site also does a great job with diversification. You can begin targeting next years searchers for the most popular search terms with the year added into your on site optimization. In this case, a keyword rich domain is not as important as it would be for your more typical "sniper" type niche site. Your main focus will be on lots of long tail traffic through lots of content and a strong focus on facebook integration to help the site go viral.
